Warren Buffett creates "wonder" for GEICO

This one is too good to pass up. Warren Buffett is perhaps the third richest man in the world. He is Chairman of Berkshire-Hathaway, a holding company that owns many other companies, including GEICO. And, he is in his 70s! GEICO has a new phase of its campaign running, featuring Warren Buffet doing an impression of Axl Rose from Guns N Roses. It's a hoot; beats a gecko any day. And, the song isn't half bad.

This advertisement is one that engages the consumer in so many different ways. Not only is the song catchy (the tune is now playing in my head), but it also features the gecko playing a guitar, happy and enthusiastic employees singing, and most notably Warren Buffet doing an impression of Axl Rose. In this way, the ad can appeal to consumers of all ages-- young kids (even though they are not a suitable audience for insurance) who may find the geico humorous, teens and adults who may find the song catchy, and middle aged adults who will find the Axl Rose impression humorous. This advertisment definitely seeks to engage, and is very successful!

I found this blog to be intriguing because of the entire idea of a GEICO advertisement being a rendition of a Guns-n-Roses song. Like we discussed so many times in class, these are the kind of ads that really create engagement for the audience. It makes you want to watch more and more and you remember that it's a Geico commercial. It's entertaining, funny, and so many audiences love the band.

The only negative aspect about running an ad such as this one is that I really had no idea what was going on. I was just too busy laughing and enjoying the song and acting. However, I now have it embedded in my brain and can remember that this is an ad for Geico, so they've definitely done something right. They've definitely created awareness!

Personally I think the GEICO commercials on air now are very annoying and do not deliver a message at all. They seem to only present the lizard and use him as their memorable figure. This commercial did the opposite. The video makes the company seem very reliable and the reptile to be multi-talented (playing guitar behind his head). Also it's pretty entertaining and has new age humor. The only thing I'm afraid of is the high standard the company would have hold for their service. & the fact that the reptile is not presented the same way, here he is a guy dressed in a suit instead of a digitally created animal that talks. Will he still be remembered in the same light?

I like the idea behind this advertisement because it incorporates humor that most advertisements fail to do properly. The song choice makes the commercial appealing to those who were fans of Axl Rose in the past. It can still be perceived positively by the younger generation as well, because of the catchy tune and engaging format of the ad. It doesn't quite relate to insurance, but the happy tone of the ad make GEICO remembered in a positive way.
